It’s Almost April — The Tax Deadline Is Coming Up

An image of blooming flowers, showing that it is April and taxes are due soon. It is time to do your bookkeeping for your business.

Are your books ready… or are you scrambling?

It’s that time of year again.

March is wrapping up, April is right around the corner, and the tax deadline is coming fast. For a lot of small business owners, this is when the stress starts to kick in.

  • “Where are all my receipts?”

  • “Are my numbers even right?”

  • “I think I made money… but I’m not sure how much?”

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

The Reality of Waiting Too Long

If your books haven’t been touched all year, waiting until the last minute can lead to:

  • Rushing through your numbers

  • Guessing on expenses

  • Missing deductions

  • Paying your CPA extra for cleanup

  • Feeling overwhelmed and behind

And worst of all — potentially overpaying in taxes or filing inaccurate information.

What You Should Be Doing Right Now

If you haven’t gotten your books ready yet, here’s what to focus on ASAP:

1. Make Sure All Income Is Recorded

Check your:

  • Bank deposits

  • Payment apps (Venmo, PayPal, Square, etc.)

  • Outstanding invoices

Everything needs to be accounted for, even if you didn’t get a 1099.

2. Gather and Categorize Expenses

Go through:

  • Bank and credit card statements

  • Receipts

  • Subscriptions and recurring charges

Make sure everything is categorized correctly. This is where your deductions come from.

3. Reconcile Your Accounts

Your books should match your bank statements.

If they don’t:

  • You may have missing transactions

  • Duplicate entries

  • Or incorrect amounts

This step is what makes your numbers reliable.

4. Run Your Reports

At a minimum, you should have:

  • Profit & Loss Statement

  • Balance Sheet

These are what your tax preparer needs and what tells you how your business actually performed.

If You’re Behind… You’re Not Alone

A lot of business owners wait until March (or even April) to deal with their books.

The important thing is not when you start — it’s that you get it done correctly.

But trying to clean up an entire year in a few days can be overwhelming if you don’t have a system.

Don’t Wait Until the Last Week

The closer we get to the deadline:

  • The harder it is to get help

  • The more rushed everything becomes

  • The higher the stress

Taking action now gives you time to:

  • Fix mistakes

  • Maximize deductions

  • File confidently
